FAQ: Athletic Therapy & Insurance Coverage

Here is some helpful info that covers the most common questions people have in regards to insurance coverage for Athletic Therapy. Please contact me if you have any questions, I’m happy to help!

1.) Do I have coverage?

It depends on the insurance company you use and the type of plan that you have; MOST plans  include Athletic Therapy. If you aren’t sure, I recommend that you CALL your insurance company to ask. Because this is a smaller profession, sometimes Athletic Therapy isn't listed in your benefits booklet or the drop down menu for online claim submissions. Even if it doesn't directly say "Athletic Therapy" you might still be covered so that's why I recommend calling!

2.) I tried submitting under physiotherapy/ massage therapy and it was declined?!

That’s because I am a “Certified Athletic Therapist” (NOT physiotherapist, etc). Other terms like “sport therapist, sport physio, active therapy” are used, but Athletic Therapy is the legal professional title. If you ask your insurance company if they cover “sport therapy” they will likely say NO! But if you ask about “ATHLETIC THERAPY”, you are using the correct title and are more likely to get an accurate answer.

If you are submitting online, not all insurance companies have an option for Athletic Therapy, even if it might be covered. Ask your insurance company which category you should be submitting your receipts under.

3.) What's your registration number?

On your receipt, on the top right hand side it will say my name and credentials (Certified Athletic Therapist) followed by "CAT(C)" and then a number. This is my registration/certification number. This is what your insurance company will be looking for when you submit your receipt.

4.) Your name/your clinic name doesn't come up when I type it into the online claim submission portal!

No problem. Each insurance company keeps their own separate database of clinics and practitioners. If my name/clinic name doesn't come up when you search, it likely means that your insurance company hasn't added me to their database yet. Just enter in the information as best you can and your insurance company will likely add me to their database shortly.

5.) I have been told that I don't have coverage! What now?

I recommend starting by ASKING if there is a way you can apply for coverage or add it on to your plan. These days, if a plan doesn't include Athletic Therapy it’s often due to administrative oversight. The more people who ASK for Athletic Therapy coverage the more likely it is to become a staple of all insurance plans.

If Athletic Therapy can’t be added, ask your employer or HR department. For group policies, they are likely able to add it on to everyone's plan when it comes time to renew.
